LE wrestling edges Tigers

By BRAD MORRIS Herald Sports Editor

CARROLL - Logan Elm took both duals at Bloom-Carroll Thursday, edging Circleville 32-28 and thumping home-standing Bloom-Carroll 59-15.

"I wasn't real pleased with the way we wrestled against Circleville," LE coach Jan Hurd said. "Without the forfeits, they beat us. Their kids wrestled well and Coach (Jerry) Post and his staff deserve a lot of credit.

" ... Against Bloom-Carroll we picked it up and wrestled tremendously like I expected."

Logan Elm, now 3-1 in Mid-State League duals, took charge in the lower weight classes sweeping from 103 to 130.

LE sophomore Michael Vollman defeated Circleville's Martin Crawford 10-3 at 112, while fellow sophomore Shane Gifford won 20-5 over Tom Cheadle.

Corey Johnson (103), Dustin Gatwood (119) and Daniel Gifford (130) all won by forfeits for the Braves.

Circleville's Russell McFadden in 135 scored a 9-3 win over Brad Wolford while CHS junior Daniel Widmayer beat Thomas Bohrer 13-7 at 140.

LE senior Jeff Evans edged Chris Starner on a close 7-6 decision, which eventually decided the match at 145.

Except for Logan Elm's Dustin Dexter taking a 8-4 win over Matt Dennis at 171, the Tigers controlled all the matches from 152 up.

Circleville freshman Nathan Richardson pinned Logan Elm sophomore Devin Haddox in 3:23 at 152 and Mike Roeder beat Luke Sherman in 160 by a 13-1 decision.

Terry Ford won by a 4-0 shutout over Logan Elm's Cody Smith at 189, while CHS junior Roland Redmon defeated Justin Duehren 11-7 in 215.

Dustin Crawford was able to pin Ben Baker in 1:25 at the heavyweight class.

"It was an exciting two duals that came down to the end," Circleville coach Jerry Post said. "We battled Logan Elm to the end and beat them seven matches to four if you discount the forfeits.

"In duals, it's hard to win when you spot an opponent 18 points, but I'm very proud of the way our guys wrestled and coming back from that with a chance to win."

Circleville, now 2-2 overall in the MSL, beat Bloom-Carroll 39-37.

McFadden (pin in 3:23); Widmayer (3-2); Starner (be forfeit); Roeder (pin at 5:28); Dennis (by forfeit); Ford (by pin at 101) and Crawford (by forfeit) all took wins for the Tigers.

"The match came down to 112 and Matin Crawford got beat 14-0, but it was extremely important for him to not get pinned, because we would of lose then," Post said. "Sometimes it's how you lose that decides the outcome of a dual, and I'm proud of Martin for battling hard."

Baker, Dexter and Evans all took wins for Logan Elm against B-C by forfeits.

Daniel Gifford (pin at 1:34); Wolford (14-3); Bohrer (win by tech fall); Sherman (11-1); Smith (pin at 3:36); Duehren (15-3); Johnson 9pin in 4:32) and Shane Gifford (pin at 2:49) also won for the Braves in matches against Bloom-Carroll (0-4 in MSL duals).

Logan Elm and Circleville both travel to the Miami Trace Invitational over the weekend.

Both return home for league competition Thursday with the Braves entertaining Hamilton Township and Amanda-Clearcreek at 5 p.m., while Circleville will host Fairfield Union in a dual one hour later.
