Any
game that involves 82 free throws isn't a pretty affair.
And for the causal basketball fan, the Zane Trace-Logan Elm girls
basketball game was a contest that wasn't for the faint of heart.
The Lady Pioneers converted on 15 of 29 free throw attempts in the
fourth quarter to put away Logan Elm 58-53 Wednesday evening in the
Spangler Memorial Gymnasium.
"Our
kids worked hard and went after it out there," LE coach Donna Peters
said. "Andrea played well and stepped up nicely for us and Amanda
McDaniel also played well inside.
"Katie (Hupp) was able to get us some boards and add a few putbacks to
help out. We basically had two juniors and three seniors step up and
give us some nice production tonight."
Logan Elm (3-6) built a 45-38 lead in the fourth quarter as a result of
a three-pointer and two free throws from a technical foul against a ZT
assistant coach by junior Andrea Anderson.
That's when Zane Trace started what seemed to be an every possession
parade to the charity stripe, using a layup off a LE turnover and two
free throws by Courtney Congrove and a freebie off the hands off of
Danielle Harrington to take a 49-48 lead with 2:18 remaining in the
game.
The
points by Congrove and Harrington were the backbone of what would turn
out to be a 17-3 run that increased the lead to 55-48 after a pair of
fastbreak layups from Shayna Cox.
Zane
Trace (6-1) converted 10 free throws as part of the 17 points.
All of the free throws eventually played havoc with the Logan Elm
lineup, forcing Anderson - who led the Braves with 28 points, including
9 of 10 from the line - Lacey Elliott, Katie Hupp and Amanda McDaniel
all to the bench with five fouls.
Logan Elm managed to trim the lead with senior Mallory Rittinger being
fouled on a three-point attempt, which she converted two free throws on,
while adding one more freebie as a result of a technical foul assessed
to a ZT player.
Rittinger's free throws cut the lead down to 55-51, but Trace put in two
more free throws on four attempts to seal the victory.
"Mallory did a nice job making 2 of 3 free throws, then 1 for 2 on the
tech," Peters said. "She handled their pressure well and helped get us
into the swing of things finding the open player."
While a 22-11 foul gap to Zane Trace eventually finished off the Lady
Braves in the second half, LE used a press and fast-paced offense to
storm out to a 14-3 lead in the first quarter.
Anderson tallied eight during the period on three layups and a jumper
while Hupp scored twice from the field and added one more at the line.
Logan Elm shot 7 of 15 for the first quarter, while forcing seven Zane
Trace turnovers on a 3 for 10 shooting first period for the Lady
Pioneers.
Zane Trace managed to take their first lead of the night at 18-17 with a
free throw by Katie Bost, but a triple banked off the backboard by
Anderson and a jumper from Hupp gave LE a 27-25 halftime advantage.
The Lady Pioneers finished the game shooting 28 of 48 (58 percent) from
the line while LE put in 18 of 34 (53 percent).
"Free throw shooting has plagued us all year," Peters said. "We only
made 8 of 17 in the first half and if we would of just made half of
those, this could of been a big story."
Aiding Anderson in her 28-point performance that led all game scorers
were Hupp with nine points with Lyenya Riddle adding six.
Harrington led the Pioneers with 11 points, all coming from the line in
a 11 for 22 performance from the stripe, while Chandra Hoffman added 10
and Congrove nine for Trace.
Logan Elm returns to action today against Washington Court House at home
while Zane Trace is off until the new year when they travel to Unioto on
January 5th to resume Scioto Valley Conference play.
Logan Elm also fell in the reserve game by a 26-22 count with Alicia
Salyers leading the way with 12 points as Jaisa Thomas added seven and
Brittany Lane three for the Braves. |
