Logan Elm can't solve Teays Valley defense

By JOHN HOWLEY For The Herald

ASHVILLE - Teays Valley came through with a strong defensive effort in avenging and earlier season loss with a 49-39 win over Logan Elm.

”The first thing we said before the game, we told our post players they had to own the post. They had to limit (Logan Elm’s) post play and not allow them offensive rebounds and our posts did a good job for us,” TV coach Jeremy Schaal said.

The Vikings grabbed six offensive rebounds in the first period in getting out to a 15-7 lead. They outrebounded LE 14-8 in the period and ended the night with a 45-35 advantage. Jordyn Althaus led the way with 10 rebounds while Schaal credited Heather Welsh, Morgan Crecelius and Kayla Galloway with helping control the post.

A couple baskets by Keri Callihan helped TV start the second period off well and the defense kept the Braves from converting a field goal until only 47 seconds remained in the period as the Vikings went up 26-14 at the half.

Logan Elm ended the first half hitting only 3 of 21 shots from the field.

”We took some shots but nothing would fall for us and we’ve never been a very good outside shooting team, either,” LE coach Donna Peters said.

“Luckily our defense in the first half was pretty good. Our defense stopped them from scoring and stopped them from pressing,” Schaal said. “The second half they were scoring more and got in their press and caused turnovers.”

Teays Valley had the lead up to 34-17 midway through the third period. Logan Elm came through with six straight points from Katie Hupp and ended the period down by the same 12 point-margin (39-27) the period started with.

“We’ve been in a lot of close games because we played only three of four quarters. We came out and played well in the third and that kept us going,” Schaal said. “We played a solid third quarter tonight.”

Hitting eight of 11 free throws in the fourth period, Teays Valley was able to keep Logan Elm from getting any closer than eight points.

“We have a problem where we can’t seem to break the 40 barrier a couple times in a row,” Peters said. “The first half was a bad half scoring seven and seven and then we got in double figures with 13 and 12 in the second half.”

“We always wait too late to start. That bad half really hindered us being down 12.”

Jesse VonIns led the Vikings with 15 points while Ashley Harmon put in 11.
Andrea Anderson was the game’s top scorer as she put in 16 points for LE.

“Andrea’s been sick and she stepped up and played well,” Peters said. “We need to get everybody in the flow.”

“We wanted to plug up the middle and force them to shoot from outside,” Schaal said. “We wanted to take away Hupp and tried to stop Anderson, but she kept penetrating on us.”

Teays Valley will head to Amanda-Clearcreek Tuesday night while Logan Elm hosts Hamilton Township.

Teays Valley was a 35-28 winner in the JV game.

Jenna Arnold led TV with 14 points while Tiffany Harmon had nine, Kayla Gallaway had six and Tiffany Horner, Amanda Porter and Kristy Moore had two each.

Janie Waidelich had eight to lead Logan Elm with Jaisa Thomas scoring six, Dakota Vansickle and Alicia Salyers scoring four each and Brittany Oberly, Kyla Pierce and Alex McGuire scoring two each.
