Logan Elm had a
strong start to Saturday’s game with Fairfield Union but suffered
through a stretch in the third period that proved the difference in a
53-45 win for the visiting Falcons.
“They played hard the entire game,” LE coach Donna Peters said of her
Braves. “We’ve always been plagued with the third quarter. We played a
little timid in the third quarter.”
Tied 25-25 at the half, the teams played even in the first part of the
third period with each team adding eight points to their total. Marissa
Groves then scored six straight points for the Falcons (13-5, 11-2).
After Katie Hupp scored for the Braves, Tara Poling sunk a 3-pointer and
Shannon Powell added two to put the Falcons up 44-35 heading into the
final period.
“Groves has that nice little turnaround and we couldn’t shut her down,”
Peters said.
Groves had 10 of
her team-high 15 in the third period. Lauren Justice had all 12 of her
points for the Falcons in the first half. “It was the Justice show in
the first half and the Groves show in the second,” Peters said. That
nine-point advantage at the end of the third proved the difference as LE
had a 10-9 scoring advantage in the fourth.
Andrea Anderson had 10 of her game-high 16 in the first half to lead the
Braves. Lacey Elliott added nine and Lyenya Riddle had eight.
“Anderson had a nice game again,” Peters said. “It’s been a problem all
year not being able to get another person in double digits consistently
to help us out.”
“We’ve got two
more games and hopefully we’ll get those things corrected before our
last game and the tournament.”
The Braves (8-11,
6-7) finish the regular season Friday night at Amanda-Clearcreek.
Fairfield Union
won the reserve game 35-30.
Scoring for the Braves were Janie Waidelich with 12 points, Brittney
Oberly with eight, Alicia Salyers with seven, Jaisa Thomas with two and
Dakota VanSickle with one.
