A pair of tough
losses trailed both Logan Elm and Canal Winchester as the teams hit the
court Saturday night looking to turn things around. Canal Winchester was
able to come up with a big fourth quarter to get the win 71-59.
“That was a tough
loss Tuesday but I don’t think we hung our heads. We battled hard,” LE
coach Doug Stiverson said. “I give Canal Winchester credit, they played
a real good game tonight.”
The Braves (13-5,
7-5) came out of halftime trailing 37-27.
Jamie Morris came
through for the Braves scoring LE’s first nine points of the third
period to pull the team to within 41-36. Kyle Reichelderfer sunk a
3-pointer and then got hold of a quick turnover and put it back in to
tie the game with 3:42 left in the period.
Reichelderfer
added five more points in the period and Ryan Hoffman hit with 12 second
left to put LE up 48-47. A basket by Bryan McDonald as the quarter
expired gave the lead back to the Indians at 49-48.
“Our kids fought
back hard in the second half,” Stiverson said. “We only gave up 12 in
the third. It just seemed like we were a play or two away from getting
over the hump - we just couldn’t get it done.”
The Indians (9-9,
7-5) pulled away to start the fourth with a 12-2 run. Joe Klamfoth had
six of those and Sean Elliott four while Morris had the lone score for
LE during the stretch.
Five straight
points from Elliott later in the period gave CW a 13-point lead.
Three-pointers from Evan Blake and Reichelderfer around a CW free throw
closed the gap to 67-59 with 44 seconds left before Elliott added a pair
of free throws as did Klamfoth.
“After losing to
Carroll at the last second and to Circleville in the same way, it’s nice
to see our kids hanging in there,” CW coach Kent Riggs said. “Logan Elm
has been so good the last two or three years that it’s nice to get a win
over them.”
“In the last
quarter, (Justin) Odenthal and (Darren) Wagner had to guard Blake and
Reichelderfer. Our defense in the fourth quarter, when we had to go
man-to-man, was real good.”
Elliott ended the
night with 31 points on 11-18 shooting from the field and 7-7 from the
line.
“You’re not going
to find a better player around here,” Stiverson said. “Our kids did make
it a lot harder for him in the second half but he knocked them down in
the fourth when he needed to.”
Reichelderfer
ended the night as Logan Elm’s leading scorer with 22 points.
Overshadowed by
the loss was Evan Blake’s 16 points which give him 1,002 for his varsity
career. He also had eight rebounds and six assists.
“It was an
exciting moment to get a 1,000 points, but I would of rather seen the
game come out differently for us,” Blake said. “It was tough to see us
lose the game, but it was nice to have the support of all my teammates,
coaches and the fans to help me do it.”
“Evan’s a
four-year starter for us and has been a great, great player,” Stiverson
said. “He’s been a good teammate not only to the kids on the team but
the younger kids as well. I¹m real happy for him.”
The Braves look to
turn things around at Fairfield Union Tuesday night.
Canal Winchester
was a 32-27 winner in the reserve game.
Tim Congrove led
LE with 10 points while Ben Lee had six, Luke Sargent had four, Chad
Holbrook and Eric Holbrook had three each and Braden Leist had one. |
