With competition in girls golf tightening in Pickaway County, Logan Elm had to step up its game to retain the county title with a 396 on Thursday at Cooks Creek Golf Course.

“(Coach Tim Wagner) and I have been working with our girls on their short game, and it seems to be paying off,” Logan Elm coach Lora Wagner said.

Logan Elm’s Taylor Saxton took medalist honors with an 81 at the tournament, which resumed after being suspended by multiple storms last month.
Emily Robinson shot 95, Bailey Pontius had 104 and Kayla Fox shot 121 for the host Braves.

“It was nice to see our girls step up for the win, because we knew this tournament was going to be tight with the way Westfall has been playing and the way Teays Valley has been playing, even though they were hurt by Keelia Nester not playing due to illness,” Wagner said. “The quality of girls golf in our county is definitely on the upswing, and that is nice to see.

Westfall finished second with 408, led by Breanna Post with 95, Sunny Stewart and Mary Roush each shooting 102 and Erin Roush carding 109.

“We didn’t play really well, because I think we let the pressure of playing for the county title get to us some,” Westfall coach John Butts said. “Give credit to Logan Elm for doing what they needed to in order to win, but hopefully this is something our girls can learn from.”

Teays Valley finished third with 442. Kayla Fowler shot 101, Makala Pollock chipped in for 102, Taylor Luft scored 117 and Quencie Williams added 122 for the Vikings.

“We were not playing well when the tournament was postponed due to rain,” TV coach Annette Riley said. “We went into the second half of the tournament (Thursday) with the each player having the goal of improving their second nine score.

“I felt each of the girls managed the course much better, which in return caused each one to post a better score then their first half.”
